Your First Appointment
When you visit our office, an extensive evaluation process begins. Since the severity and
type of spinal misalignment is completely unique to each individual, the process begins by
taking a detailed consultation. This includes the chief complaints, the location of these
symptoms in the body, how they began, and how long they have been present. Dr. Heath
will then determine if your spinal column is significantly misaligned or out of balance by first
checking for a leg-length imbalance. This is known as the short-leg phenomenon. This is
where the leg is not really shorter, but appears shorter because the hips are unbalanced.
Dr. Heath then measures your spinal posture to determine the extent of spinal imbalance
that is present. These measurements are also used to determine the progress of your
spinal stability on follow-up visits and to help in determining when another spinal correction
is needed. If it is initially determined that you have significant body imbalance, a specific
series of x-rays is performed. Dr. Heath then mathematically analyzes the x-rays. These
measurements allow Dr. Heath to determine the direction that the first vertebra has shifted,
tilted, or rotated from its normal position. A formula is then calculated which allows Dr.
Heath to return the first vertebra to its normal position. The calculated formula for each
correction is as individual to the patient as one's fingerprints.
Your Second Appointment
Dr. Heath reviews his initial findings with you. When it is time for your spinal correction,
you lie on the adjusting table on your side. Dr. Heath applies a light, per-determined
direction of pressure on the side of the neck to gently re-position the head over the center
of the neck. A very light pressure is all that is needed because of the formula derived from
the x-rays. This adjustment balances the entire spine and pelvis restoring body balance
and removing nerve pressure.
After this initial correction only, x-rays are necessary to determine the success of the
correction. If the analysis shows that an adequate correction was made, future corrections
will be made using the same formula.
A fifteen minute rest in our relaxation room encourages the spine to stabilize in its new,
corrected position.
The Healing Process
Correcting and stabilizing the spine may require a number of visits over a period of time.
Just as the Orthodontist requires ample time to straighten teeth, so it is with balancing and
stabilizing the spine. The objective measurements used in the NUCCA procedure such as
leg-length checks and spinal posture measurements help to monitor the recovery process
over time.
Recovery continues as long as the correction holds and optimal spinal balance is
maintained. A spinal correction is only given when the body demonstrates a sufficient
misalignment After your spinal correction, you will want to be mindful of looking after
yourself during the initial phase of the healing process. Dr. Heath will help you to
understand what you can do to help maintain your spinal correction. Receiving a spinal
correction as few times as possible is ideal, and it is our goal to help you achieve this.
